A contemporary copy of a famous photograph showing the Apache Kid ( Haskay-bay-nay-ntayl). The Kid is in the middle wearing the uniform of an Apache scout in 1881 after befriending Al Sieber, U.S. Chief of Scouts earlier. The Kid was promoted to Sargent in 1882. He is shown with two other scouts in front of their Wickiups in Arizona. The Scout on the left is believed to be Massai and the one on the right is Sgt. Rowdy (who won the Metal of Honor). He served under Sieber who served under General George Crook. He served until 1885 when he became drunk and disorderly and eventually ventured into the life of an outlaw. You can read all about the Apache Kid on Wikipedia and books published about him. The image is light as many were when taken outside in this period.
