John Hurley was a member of the New Mexico Seven Rivers Warriors. He was in the posse, as a Lincoln County Deputy Sheriff, that murdered John Tunstall. He was also in the Jesse Evans Gang. He fought in the "Battle of Lincoln" and the "Five Day Battle" of the Lincoln County War. After the War he later became a U.S. Deputy Marshal and played a very minor roll in capturing Billy the Kid in 1880. He served as a Deputy Sheriff again under Sheriff John W. Poe and on January 24, 1884 he was shot and killed at Chaperito by a rustler named Nicolas Aragon. THIS photograph (tintype) came directly from the FRED WAITE ESTATE.
