Beautiful photograph of a horse at a military camp. In the negative is the following: "Comanche, the only survivor of the Custer Massacre. Badly wounded he was taken to Ft. Lincoln on a stretcher and carefully tended until well." He was treated like a hero and treasure the rest of his life. Well cared for.

In 1879, Comanche was brought to Fort Meade by the 7th Regiment, 7th Cavalry where he remained until 1887. After that he was taken to Fort Riley, Kansas where he was named "Second Commanding Officer" of the 7th Cavalry. He was made a pet and loved to drink beer. He died of colic on November 7, 1891 at age 29. He was one of only 4 horses ever given a full military funeral with full military honors.  He was sent to a taxidermy and his remains can be seen today in the Natural History Museum at the University of Kansas.
