CDV photograph of Archie Samuels, the half brother of Jesse and Frank James. He was killed when agents of the Pinkerton Detective Agency threw a bomb into the James farm house on January 26, 1875 in a raid. The bomb also severed the arm of his mother Zerelda Samuel. For many years the explosion was listed as an accident but a letter from Allan Pinkerton was discovered in the National Archives wherein Pinkerton gave the order for his men to use "Greek Fire" against the house which is a primitive bomb. It was no accident. At any rate, this is the only photograph of Archie Samuel believed extant. It was in the Zink auction where I won it. Frankly I had decided to buy it and would have paid much more but, like in other recent auctions, it sold for much less than it was worth falling easily into my willing hands.
