This is a large cabinet photograph. It is a light image. I do not think it was ever sharp when taken by the photographer in the sun. I am luck to have one at all. I have scanned it at 800DPI. It is of the Chadron to Chicago Cowboy Race January 13, 1893. Photographer was Foss and Eason, Chadron, Nebraska. The importance of this image is that the mounted cowboy, second from the left in front is the noted outlaw Doc Middleton (man with the full beard).  He participated in the race and is identified on the front of the image. He loved horses and became a horse thief. He formed a gang of some very rough characters. He is known to have killed several men.  He served three years in prison and after he got out he settled down some. He became first deputy sheriff of Sheridan County, Nebraska but tired of it quickly and moved to Wyoming where he became a bootlegger. He was soon jailed again. He died on December 27, 1913 in the Converse County Jail in Douglas, Wyoming.
