Cleophas Dowd when he was a deputy Sheriff in Sweetwater County, Wyoming. He was also a Pinkerton informant, Cattle Association detective, and railroad detective during his lawman carrier. He also knew the members of the Hole in the Wall gang but never exposed them or tried to arrest them. It is said he was a remarkable shot and possibly trained The Sundance Kid and Butch Cassidy to shoot better. He was killed in 1897 by Charles Reaser, a hired man on his ranch. Reaser said he had been hired to do so. The handwriting and signature are Dowd's.
