Cleophas Dowd was a one time Catholic priest but gave up his priesthood and became a rancher in Utah in his later life. Some say he was not an outlaw and some say he crossed the line but he did know the members of the Hole in the Wall gang personally. It is said he taught the Sundance Kid and Butch Cassidy to shoot. Dowd was known as a remarkable shot himself and practiced often. This is an early cabinet photograph from his son's album, Charles Gervin Dowd. He was a Pinkerton informant, a deputy Sheriff of Sweetwater County, Wyoming, a cattle detective, and railroad detective in his carrier.
