Texas Ranger George Herold was the man who killed the Texas outlaw Sam Bass. The Bass gang had just killed Deputy Sheriff A.W. Grimes on July 19, 1878 at Round Rock, Texas. A gun fight began after they killed Grimes and Bass was shot by Texas Ranger Herold and Sergeant Richard Ware on January 20. Bass was wounded, found, and died on July 21, 1878. This is one of the two images of George Harold to have ever surfaced. It is not in very good condition but historically, an important find. On the back is written, "George Harold leaves this picture to his son to remember him by". It is dated January 2, 1900 on the back as well. At the time Harold was working as a Deputy Sheriff in El Paso, Texas.
