In Arizona, his basic trade was listed as "Proprietor, retail butcher". He was named "Climax Jim" after the brand of chewing tobacco he used called Climax. He became a cowboy and worked on various ranches in Arizona. From this, he became a horse and cattle thief. He developed a reputation of being able to escape any jail and break out of any handcuffs or chains. After a time, he simply disappeared and ended up in San Diego, California where he died on September 25, 1921. He never killed or hurt anyone and people said he had a great sense of humor but he just could not help be crooked.
