This is a strange image of a possible lynching. The photograph was found in an antique store in Eureka Springs, AR. The "victim" seems to be staged and wearing a harness as the shoulders are straight. The "hanged man" appears to be an Indian, Black or mixed race. The hangmen seem rather relaxed as the hold the rope, the tree does not seem strong enough, and the image is a professional image. I would date this image around 1910. The question is whether this image was produced as a lark or is it reenacting something that happened in the past? If reenacted, why? The investigation does not end there. A man by the name of Gode Davis, owner and curator of americanlynching.com site found another image of the same hanging. He believes the lynched man is either Jimmy Avery who was lynched for robbing, raping, and murdering a white woman on her farm OR Tecumseh Avery who was accused of molesting a young boy. Mr. Davis believes the image is of a real lynching in Eureka Springs, AR.
