Outstanding and rare cabinet photograph showing Kit Carson and his three other members of the Ute Indian Commission in 1868. They are D.C. Oakes (upper left), Lafayette Head (upper right), Christopher "Kit" Carson (lower left) and Hiram P. Bennett (lower right). Carson, at the urging of Washington and the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, went to Washington with a group of Ute Indian chiefs to plead for assistance for the tribe. He traveled back to Taos, New Mexico and died shortly after he left Washington that same year.
