I have seen this image in books all of my life. It took me years to get an original cabinet of it. On the street former City Marshal Dallas Stoudenmire  was shot and killed on September 18, 1882. This image was taken after this date. He was a tall man for his time, involved in several gunfights and had a deadly reputation. James Manning, as a result of a family feud with Stoudenmire, shot him dead after Stoudenmire had wounded his brother "Doc" Manning.  The Mannings were tried but found innocent  based on self defense by a jury full of their friends. El Paso was a tough and hard town then, full of very bad elements. Note the Poney Saloon on the left side of the row of buildings. It was also a well known bad spot.  Stoudenmire  died essentially in the middle of the street after leaving the Pony saloon with the Mannings.
