Kintpuash or Kientpaush or also known as Captain Jack (1837-1873). He was a Modoc Indian Chief He led a group away from the Klamath Reservation and tried to return to their lands in California. He was later to be charged with War crimes when he entered a peace talk with a concealed weapon and MURDERED General Edward Canby. He was captured, tried and found guilty at the time of this photograph and hung by the Army on October 3, 1873. This image was taken by L. Heller and produced by Watkins' Yosemite Art Gallery.
