Bill Germayne known as "Bill the German" was born in Germany in 1852. He came to the U.S. in 1868. His real name was Bill Yaufman. He was a hunter and a scout starting about 1876. In the 1880s he went to Newark, NJ where he ran a saloon, gun store, and shooting range based on Old West themes. He had drinking problems but was said to have accompanied President Chester Arthur on a tour to Yellowstone in 1883. However, that was a mistake. He actually guided the Rufus Hatch party there which mingled with President Arthur's. He and a man named Crow entertained the mixed groups with trick shooting which was Germayne's special talent. After that he guided English Lord Headley on a hunting trip into the mountains. He died in 1891. The photograph was taken by Chas. Eisenmann, NY.
