Historic Personalities / Sheriff Joseph Westley Damron, Waco, Texas
« on: May 22, 2022, 07:26:10 am »
Two original cabinet photographs, one taken by Bergstrom, Waco, Texas and the other by Jackson, Waco, Texas. The one on the left is of  McLennan County Sheriff Joseph Westley Damron . Waco is the County Seat. The images date in 1880s.  On the right is Sheriff Damron (upper row, middle) with his deputies. Sheriff Damron wears his badge as do two of the deputies standing beside him. All five men hold their Single Action Colts. The group image is extremely rare as 95% of images of officers do NOT show their guns. They often show their badges but guns are very rare. Seated man on the right holds a Mexican sombero hat.  Waco is located 100 miles from Fort Worth, Texas and 1/2 way between Fort Worth and Austin. I doubt the officers had much to enforce in Waco proper as it was never a "Wild West" town. More famous for, a house of prostitution (legal and controlled by the city), cotton growing, farming, and a Baptist University.

Historic Personalities / Samuel O'Brien Harris as Texas Sheriff.
« on: May 21, 2022, 08:46:24 am »
Fannin County, Texas, Sheriff  Samuel O'Brien Harris circa 1889-1890 taken in Ladonia, Texas by W.B. Praytor. He is wearing his crescent/star badge of office in this studio cabinet image. Harris was a Sheriff after serving briefly in 1889 as a U.S. Deputy Marshal in Indian Territory under Judge Isaac Parker. The next photo shows that era.  This is a sepia photograph.

Historic Personalities / U.S. Marshal Samuel O'Brien Harris

Left:  Samuel O'Brien Harris and his wife Maggie taken in 1882 by Gannaway in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She was from Booken, Oklahoma Territory.  Right: U.S. Deputy Marshal Harris covering Indian Territory under Judge Isaac Parker also taken by Gannaway. He is wearing his badge. He is listed on the internet as taking the Marshal oath in 1889 for a few short months but this image in dated 1888. He may have enlisted and served from 1888 until 1889 (unknown).  Both images are fully identified on the back by their son.  It is rare to have any photograph of one of these historic Deputy Marshals especially wearing their badge.  They are both albumen photographs.

Historic Personalities / Formal Portrait of Capt. Jack Crawford
« on: May 13, 2022, 01:11:22 pm »
A bit worse for wear large cabinet photograph of Capt. Jack Crawford taken by the famous photographer Tabor in San Francisco. Crawford is dressed formally for one of his lectures there circa 1900-1910. The image is signed under the photograph. Crawford signed EVERYTHING so signed anything by him is common, not rare. However, this image by Tabor makes it rarer than most. The interesting thing is that I found it originally in California and sold it a few years later at auction. Recently, I saw it was again for sale and bought it back. It will now stay with me for the rest of my life. I will not cover here anything about Crawford as he is knee deep on Google.

Historic Personalities / Gabriel Renville (or Remville)
« on: May 13, 2022, 12:52:58 pm »
Wikipedia spells his name Renville. This original photograph of him spells his name Remville on the front and back. The back appears to be his original ink signature. At any rate he was also known as Ti'wakan (Sacred Lodge) and was the Chief of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Sioux Tribe from 1866 until his death in 1892. He opposed fighting with the U.S. and was a leader in the Dakota Peace party. He helped create the Lake Traverse Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Images of him are rare. This one was taken by Steinhauer, S. Dakota. in the late 1880s or circa 1890.

Historic Personalities / Vintage Judge Roy Bean
« on: May 13, 2022, 12:36:11 pm »
4.5" x 6" Type II, vintage, unmounted sepia image of Judge Roy Bean sitting on his famous white horse in front of his historic saloon and courthouse circa 1900-1910. He wears a Mexican sombrero hat. Two men stand on the porch of his iconic saloon.   Bean was a saloon keeper and Justice of the Peace in Val Verde County, Texas. He called himself "The only law West of the Pecos" and he held court inside of the saloon. This image is from the personal archives of photographer John Tackett. It was later in the collection of Jim and Theresa Earl sold by Bonhams Los Angles. Roy Bean images in any format are very hard to obtain today. Early, original cabinet photographs are nearly impossible.

Hangings and Lynchings / Last man publicly hanged in Ohio
« on: May 13, 2022, 09:13:58 am »
CDV of W.H. Gribbens who was legally hanged along with his friend in Ashland, Ohio in 1884. His friend actually killed the man with a rock in an argument but Gribbens was tried as an accessory and hanged with him. Witnesses testified that Gribbens had nothing to do with the fight so he was innocent. Miscarriage of justice.  It was the last of the public hanging in Ohio. You can read more on Google.

Two small unmounted images showing former Texas Ranger Captain Jim Gillett shaking hands with Comanche adoptee Herman Lehmann. Lehmann had fought against Gillett in 1875 when Gillette was a Captain of Frontier Texas Rangers. It was taken circa 1900-1910. I am sure these were published previously in one of the numerous books and articles on this Famous Texas Ranger Captain. You can find both men on Google. Rare in any original form.

Historic Personalities / Officer? Jefferson Brks 1888
« on: May 13, 2022, 08:06:38 am »
This cabinet photograph is from the Hugh Thomason collection. It was with the photograph of Foggy Byerly just before this one. Thomason has identified him just as "Pogue" on the back. It was taken in same spot as Byerly at the Jefferson Brks in Mo. in 1888. He appears to be an officer? I have not tried to identify him but undoubtedly served at Wounded Knee.

This original cabinet photograph was taken by Jos Campeau in London, England in July 1897. It was during the Buffalo Bill Cody Wild West Show there. The image is from the Capt. Hugh Thomason collection. It is identified on the back with a hand written note by Thomason. The note says: : "This is the boy who killed the buffalo bull with a bow and errow in the last buffalo hunt.  Photo taken in London while with the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show." Contrast is slightly better in the original.

Cabinet photograph of Capt Hugh Thomason of the 6th Mounted Infantry, Co. A.  when he was involved in the Wounded Knee battle in S.D. in 1890. He met Bufallo Bill Cody there. He became involved with the Cody Show in New York and in London in 1897. I do not know in what capacity. This image is signed by him on the back and came from his personal collection. The photo has been enhanced in the head and hat area by the photographer as some of the detail was lost due to sun light as taken outside.

Historic Personalities / Captain Jack Crawford as a Scout
« on: May 12, 2022, 07:16:34 am »
John Wallace Crawford, "Capt. Jack", moved his family to New Mexico in 1879. He became the Post Trader at Fort Craig New Mexico and went into ranching and mining. In 1880, he served as a U.S. Army Scout during the Victorio War of 1880.  He established a home at Fort Craig after the Victorio War and stayed there until after 1885 even though the Military reservation had closed.  This photograph by Wittick & Son, Albuquerque, N.M. was taken during this period in his life. It is a quite rare image of him by this famous photographer. Image was part of the Capt. Hugh Thomason collection who was involved in the Wounded Knee battle , Co. A. Infantry, 1890. He had met Crawford in New Mexico and they knew each other when both were involved in the Cody Show in London.

John Y Nelson was a trapper, hunter and scout over the years. He was married to Chief Spotted Tail's niece. He started with Cody in 1884. He took his entire family with him. In the Cody Show he was the main driver of the Dodge City Stage and he acted in several of the events over the years. He was also the interpreter for the Sioux cast.  Here, he is in a photographer's backdrop, on his horse, with a deer over his saddle. The image is a Woodburytype and it was taken during the Cody engagement in London in 1887.

Wild West Shows / Wild West Show in South Dakota
« on: May 03, 2022, 03:09:58 pm »
I like to find things like this!  This is real life. The A.S. Lewis Big Show Wild West theater arrives in Ft. Pierre, South Dakota circa 1910-1915. Banners read A.S. Lewis Big Show and one reads "To Night. The White Slave in The Big Tent." Lewis is the tall man in the middle of the group in western cloths and broad brimmed Western hat. He has his African American band on each side of him. There are nine children on the left of the photo getting in the photograph. False front buildings  on left, F.B. Davis & Co. stone building on the right, dated 1903. Must be main street in that rather small town. That night, the townspeople got a treat!

Indians / Wounded Knee Medicine Man
« on: May 03, 2022, 09:23:45 am »
Many times published, iconic cabinet photograph of the aftermath of the Wounded Knee Battle (or brutal massacre) in 1891 of the Sioux Indians on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in S.D. The man on his back is the main Medicine Man of the tribe after he was killed. I will not explain the details as there are many books, articles, movies, documentaries, and information on the internet you can read.  This  image was produced by the Northwestern Photographic Co. in Chadron, Nebraska. The image is hard to look at but it is VERY IMPORTANT to see it in order to understand man's inhumanity to man. The event was totally uncalled for.

Wild West Shows / Wild West Show Indian in London
« on: May 03, 2022, 09:06:57 am »
Interesting cabinet photograph by J. Deane Hilton, 443, STRAND W.C. London circa 1887-1888. This would be the period when the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show was in London. He is not identified which is unfortunate but not uncommon. It is a side view with him holding a knife in his left hand and a tomahawk in his right hand. He wears a Chief's headdress. Also a highly beaded bag. These images were taken to sell as souvenirs to the public after presenting copies to the individual. The Wild West Shows were highly enjoyed in England and Europe.

Wild West Shows / Mexican John
« on: May 03, 2022, 08:40:36 am »
RPPC of a man identified as Mexican John. I have no further identification but dates circa 1902-1904. He was probably one of Cody or Pawnee Bill's entertainers over time. He wears a Large Bowie type knife in a sheath and holds a rope. I would guess he was a trick roper in a show. I am not a big fan of RPPCs but in some cases this is the only photographic medium of a person extant.

Wild West Shows / Man and woman trick Shooting Team
« on: May 03, 2022, 08:23:07 am »
Another original cabinet photograph of an unknown, Wild West Show, trick shooting team in the 1880-1890 era. He is in the typical buckskin outfit with moccasins, while she is in Western attire. He hold the gun while she shoots which is, in my opinion, interesting as the bbl would get very Hot. Image is by W.C. Rowley, Elmira, N.Y.  This image had an erroneous pencil ID on the back identifying the man as Pawnee Bill  and the woman as Lillian Smith. It decidedly is NEITHER. This kind of identification is rife on the on-line auction sites to cheat the unsuspecting new collector so be careful and buy with a jaundiced eye.

Indians / Geronimo at Pan American Exposition in 1901
« on: May 03, 2022, 08:00:02 am »
Excellent clarity image of Apache Sub Chief Geronimo at the Pan American Exposition in 1901. These were sold as souvenirs to the public and afterwards. The mat is in bad condition but the original photograph is unharmed. Many lesser collectors would not buy it because of the mat but, for me, the PHOTOGRAHY condition is the real issue and well worth the purchase. Geronimo sold his signature on anything requested for $1.00. The U.S. government allowed him to do that to raise income for his personal needs.

Historic Personalities / Hickok and Denbow
« on: April 14, 2022, 04:35:02 am »
Unique and extremely rare original tintype of a young WILD BILL HICKOK and his hunting partner Robert Denbow taken in 1867. They were on a buffalo hunt after Hickok's participation in the Civil War and before his law enforcement days. One of, I believe, only TWO images of Hickok this early when he was not the celebrity he would become. Image has unimpeachable provenance.

Small image from the personal collection of photographer John Tackett. It was later owned by the  Jim and Theresa Earl Collection. Tackett was the photographer who took the famous photos of the Daltons after the Coffeeville, Kansas raid. His photograph gallery was in Coffeeville. He later built this theatre there as well. After Emmett Dalton was released, Tackett, with Emmett Dalton, wrote, filmed, produced, and distributed a movie about the famous raid that starred Emmett Dalton.

Armed Cowboys, Buck skinners and Scouts / New Mexico armed cowboy
« on: April 10, 2022, 04:48:49 am »
The mount has been extensively trimmed in order to frame it in the past. However, this is still a valuable image. It is an albumen image circa 1880s by Bass, Socorro, N.M of an armed cowboy. New Mexico images of this subject matter are quite rare as New Mexico was a small population state. The beautiful, clear image shows a western cowboy in shotgun chaps, white shirt, bandana around his neck, boots and spurs,  wearing a western hat. He is wearing a Colt SAA with ivory grip in a triple loop, MARKED (cannot read mark) western holster. He is holding his lariat in both hands.  It is overall and outstanding and rare photograph.

A rare albumen cabinet photograph of Libby, Montana in the 1880s. I like to find these for my Montana collection as they are all quite rare and have a lot of interest and historical value. There are several people on the back of the white house on the right so they can get in the photo.

Historic Personalities / Anelope Jack at Adobe Walls
« on: April 08, 2022, 09:50:21 am »
Interested documented tintype. The man in the middle is identified as "Antelope Jack" (John Thomson Jones) who was killed by the Indians during the SECOND Battle of Adobe Walls in June 1874. A group of Dodge City merchants opened a sod trading post/restaurant/ saloon a mile from the original site of the FIRST battle of Adobe Walls. The battle involved a reported 300 Indians attacking the complex. The defenders, along with "Anelope Jack", held their own but Jack and two others were killed. After that, the post was abandoned. Jack holds a rifle and has an ivory handled revolver in his belt. The man on his left wears a straw, Mexican Sombrero. They are typically armed and dressed for frontiersmen and scouts of the 1870s period.

Miscellaneous / Supply wagons
« on: April 07, 2022, 09:32:42 am »
Interesting image by Soule & Burkhart, Photographers (no location). It appears that it was taken in Arizona. In front are two stage coaches. There are at least 16 covered wagons behind the Stages. The stages are pulled by mules. Opinions vary but best guess is that it is a supply convoy for one of the major mines in the area or supplies for one of the towns. I believe it is circa 1890-1900. Some damage to the photo's background but historically interesting content.

Historic Personalities / Harrison and Chief Joseph
« on: April 07, 2022, 09:19:15 am »
Previously unpublished and possibly unique cabinet photograph circa 1890s. The man in the middle is President Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893). The man on the right (his left) is Chief Joseph. I have not been able to identify the man on Harrison's right (left in photo). Image was found in Montana. There is no photographer's mark or location.

Armed Cowboys, Buck skinners and Scouts / Indian in buckskins with box
« on: April 05, 2022, 05:25:17 pm »
This cabinet photograph circa 1885-1890 by Bowring, Wisconsin is of a buckskin dressed American Indian in a fine, fringed buckskin jacket, pants, and wide brim western hat. He has an early tomahawk in his left hand and he is holding a small box in his right hand. When you have collected this type of image for over 50 years, you have thousands of pictures in your mind that you have seen. I am very sure I have seen a picture of this man before but I cannot remember where. I have an idea he was in the Patent Medicine business and the box may be a boxed bottle of his medicine. But, I could be wrong and perhaps will never identify him. At any rate, it is an outstanding and valuable photograph.

Historic Personalities / Thomas P. Ochiltree

Ochiltree was a volunteer in 1854 as a private in Capt. John G. Walker's Texas Rangers and was in the campaign against the Apache and Comanche Indians in 1854 and 1855. He was admitted to the bar as a lawyer by the Texas Legislature in 1857. During the Civil War he was in the Confederate States Army in the First Texas Regiment and rose to the rank of major. After the War, he was the editor of the Houston Daily Telegraph from 1866-1867. He became the commissioner of immigration for Texas in Europe from 1870-1873. He was also the appointed U.S. Marshal for the eastern district of Texas in 1874. He was elected as a Representative of the 48th Congress from March 1883-March 1885. He retired in New York and died in Virginia in 1902. This cabinet photograph by Newsboy, New York was taken of him  in the 1890s.

Historic Personalities / John Wilson "Texas Jack" Vermillion
« on: April 05, 2022, 09:48:58 am »
Original framed cabinet photograph circa 1890s of John Wilson Vermillion. Contemporarily IDed on the back of the image, JWV carved in the back of the frame, and documented in a letter written to his wife Nannie Fleenor Vermillion by a personal friend of the Vermillion's and a member of Vermillion's church. In the letter, she acknowledges receipt of the framed photograph, a prayer book, and a small box that had belonged to Rev. Vermillion from Nannie after Rev. Vermillion's death. . I have all three items and the letter.
Vermillion was a Confederate soldier under General Joseph Wheeler and Nathan Bedford Forrest during the Civil War.  After the War,  the went to Dodge City in in late 1870s where he met the Earps and Doc Holliday.  He is listed as a special policeman under Virgil Earp during the Tombstone fire in 1881. After the killing of Morgan Earp in 1882, he rode with Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday during the Vendetta ride.  In 1883 he was back in Dodge City, Kansas on the side of Bat Masterson during the Dodge City War.  After that he became involved with the Soapy Smith gang in 1888 in Idaho. Circa 1890, He went back to Virginia and settled in the town of Big Stone Gap and worked as a Methodist preacher. He died in Virginia with his second wife Nannie Fleenor Vermillion and one son, Opie Vermillion, and a daughter Minnie Bell Vermillion, in 1911. His grave along with his wife is in Mendota Cemetery in Virginia. This photograph of "Texas Jack Vermillion" is 100% documented and authentic.

Wild West Shows / Traveling Wild West Show.
« on: March 29, 2022, 09:18:28 am »
Large cabinet photograph taken by Charles C. Worden in Providence, R.I. circa 1890s-1900. The view is taken outside of a small, private traveling Wild West Show which was more common in the smaller towns in the East. They entertained the smaller towns and villages that had less chances to see this type of entertainment. This troupe has three covered wagons. Two larger wagons and one little cover wagon pulled by a burrow. You can see people inside of the wagon on the left. Surrounding the wagons are Indians, cowboys, cowgirls, workers, etc. Several of these are mounted on their horses. The left hand larger wagon is pulled by horses. The one on the far right is pulled by oxen. On the far right against the trees are what appear to be townspeople from the local area and some children standing in front of the oxen pulled wagon. People in these villages had very little to entertain them and looked forward to these troupes. It was a rare form of entertainment. As well, these smaller troupes eked out a meager living by traveling from place to place while weather allowed. Mainstream collectors want to emphasize mainly the images of such troupes such as Cody's and Pawnee Bill's. As you can see, I do too but love the images of these smaller troupes that had their part in entertaining the areas that the larger troupes never made it to. They are of great historical importance as well.

Wild West Shows / Trick Rider
« on: March 28, 2022, 12:14:44 pm »
Cabinet photograph of a trick rider in a Wild West Show. It was taken by J.H. Trezise in Harrisburg, Pa in the late 1880s. As in most early images taken outside, it is very light in some areas. In this case, it is the rider's head and hat. He is making the horse rear up on his hind legs. It is not an unusual trick but not often seen in images of this period. He is in wholly chaps and cowboy gear. Notice the tent walls behind him.

Historic Personalities / Virgil Earp and his nieces
« on: March 22, 2022, 05:44:48 pm »
Original cabinet photograph of Virgil W. Earp (Wyatt Earp's older brother) with his two nieces. Alice Armstrong is on the left here. Minnie Ridgway is on the right. It was purchased by Jim and Theresa Earl from Mrs. William A. Demchak in 1977 through a minor Tombstone agent. It is one of only 5 images of Virgil known to exist. I own two. It was taken by Fowler, Yates Center, California circa 1885. Virgil was arguably the best of the Earp lawmen.

Historic Personalities / Famous photo of Jim Masterson
« on: March 22, 2022, 05:29:54 pm »
Much published and famous cabinet photograph of James "Jim" Masterson, younger brother of Bat Masterson. I waited all my life to own this image. First time I saw it reproduced was in a book of western characters I use to look at over and over again when I was 6, 7 or 8 years old. It was taken by D.B. Chase in Trinidad, Colorado in the 1880s. He was on the Police Force there at the time. See the last (tintype) image I posted just before this one for more of his outstanding record as a law enforcement officer. It is 100% original and from the Jim and Teressa Earl collection.

Historic Personalities / James "Jim" Masterson
« on: March 22, 2022, 05:15:14 pm »
James Masterson was the younger brother of Bat Masterson. In my opinion he was the BEST lawman of the Mastersons. He was the Assistant Marshal of Dodge City in 1878 under Charlie Bassett. He had several hundred arrests in 1878 and 1879. He was promoted to City Marshal after Charlie Bassett's resignation in 1879. He lost the job in 1881 when city government changed. He jointed the Police Force in Trinidad, Colorado in 1881. He became under sheriff in 1885 in Colfax County, New Mexico.  He was involved in the Gray County War in Kansas and later the battle of Cimarron.
He moved to Oklahoma Territory. He became a Deputy Sheriff of Logan County, Oklahoma. On September 1, 1893, as a Special Deputy U.S. Marshal he was involved in the Battle of Ingalls against the Doolin-Dalton gang and helped capture "Arkansas Tom" Jones.
He died in Guthrie of tuberculosis on March 31, 1895. He was only 39 years old. His entire adult life was essentially in law enforcement, unlike Bat who spent many years as a newspaper and sports reporter.
History says he was a rather shy man, not very outgoing like Bat was. He spoke in a low voice and spoke seldom. He was fearless under fire. He was not brash or boastful and did not court fame or notoriety. He was a GOOD man.

Historic Personalities / Sam Bass
« on: March 21, 2022, 06:26:46 am »
1/9th plate tintype of Sam Bass on his horse in Texas. Identified on the back. More importantly, this image came from gang member Hank Underwood along with a whisky flash professionally inscribed " "A Birthday Vial. I am still your friend. Hank Underwood". The whisky flask is 100% right and further documented as is this image. Is is distant and small however.

Historic Personalities / Dallas Stoudenmire
« on: March 20, 2022, 04:59:38 pm »
!/2 plate tintype purported to be early image of Dallas Stoudenmire when he was a town Marshal of Socorro, New Mexico in 1878-1880. He became the City Marshal of El Paso, Texas on April 11, 1881 and was killed by James Manning on September 18, 1882 in El Paso.  He was known as a violent man when drunk but a fine shot with a revolver. One of the best.  He had resigned his job as City Marshal and was serving as a Deputy U.S. Marshal of Western Texas and New Mexico appointed by U.S. Marshal Harrington Lee "Hal" Gosling at the time of his death. The image came with his documented leather sap he carried in his pocket. It is quite close in comparison to the image once owned by Bob McCubbin,  just younger and better groomed.

Historic Personalities / Outlaw Juan Cortina
« on: March 20, 2022, 07:23:56 am »
Original CDV of the Mexican outlaw, Juan Nepomuceno Cortina Goseacochea (May 1824-Oct. 1894). The image was taken in the 1860s. He was a rancher, poitician, military leader, outlaw, and Mexican folk hero. As governor, he essentially controlled the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.
He hated the Anglo-American settlements on the Mexican borderlands and targeted the civilians in a failed "Cortina War" with militia he raised. The Texas Rangers, U.S. Army and locals from the Brownsville area easily defeated his militia in 1848.

In his second Cortina War in 1861, he joined Federal troops in the Civil War. He was SOUNDLY defeated by Confederate Capt. Santos Benavidos at the battle of Carrizo. He retreated back into Mexico. He did however, conduct guerrilla warfare against Texas for years to come. After the Civil War, the Yankee carpet Bag government during occupation by the U.S. Gov. rewarded Cortina for his support during the War.

During the Mexican Revolution he opposed President Diaz. Diaz had him arrested twice after he tried to raise an army against Diaz. Diaz ordered him to be executed. However, he was imprisoned, released under house arrest in 1890 and died on October, 1894.

Although The union Army protected him until after reconstruction, he was no hero in Texas. He was simply considered a murderer and outlaw.

He again defeated the Comanche Indians on the West bank of the Nueces River.
In 1852, the was the conductor of a U.S. Mail party. he was attacked by Lipan Indians several times and fought several battles in this period. During the Civil War in Texas he helped guard the frontier against Comanche Indians. In his later years he lived in South Texas in a small village named BIGFOOT. Photograph circa 1886 of Henry N. Blake and his wife. Photograph taken by L.S. Hazeltine, Virginia City, Montana. It is signed on the back by him. I have compared signature to a letter I have signed by him on his stationary at the time. Blake was an Associate Justice of Montana Territory for four and 1/2 years appointed by President Grant serving from 1875 until 1885 .  He became the Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court from 1889-1893.  He continued to be a prominent attorney in Virginia City before and after his service on the Territorial and State Supreme Court. He also worked as a newspaper editor of the MONTANA POST in early days prior to Supreme Court services. He died in 1935 at age 97 in Boston, Massachusetts.   I have the 1887 original of Blake's Virginia City License as an attorney. It is signed by George Gohn who was a butcher, member of the Madison County government and former member of the Montana Vigilantes in the 1860s.

The back of the image is scratch signed (not printed) John Ringo. Images of Johnny Ringo are controversial but this one has contemporary identification and compares well with other images suppose to be of him.  He was known to have been educated, well dressed, and brash.

This is a very rare cabinet image to obtain of the outlaw Frank Rand. It has been published but rarely (if ever) become available in original form in ANY condition. I obtained it with the image of him after he killed himself in his cell. They were among other materials of documentation on him. This image was taken after his capture showing him photographed with an UNLOADED gun. He was allowed to do this in order to raise money for his defense.

Purely a guess but may have been made to hang in one of the newspapers he edited.

She rides an outstanding black horse with three white stockings. They are in front of a painted backdrop.  Although strange to us, I believe women were not suppose to smile in photographs.

Wild West Shows / Unknown couple in London
« on: March 14, 2022, 03:04:31 pm »
This image is from a series of 7 very large, mounted images of Buffalo Bill Cody Wild West Show entertainers, men and women, all mounted on horses. Most are identified on the back but this is the only one that is not identified. The photographer was Jas. E. Hunt, 141 Clarendon Road, North Kensington, London, England. The series is dated as 1903.  They are both on beautiful horses and she is riding side saddle. The background is a painted prop. I do not think this photograph or the others were ever meant to be sold to the public. I think they were for the entertainers themselves and meant to be framed. I bought them at auction and they got very little play in that most of the mounts are damaged. I was delighted to obtain them as they show a part of the Cody show and the horsemen/horsewomen that has not been shown in this manner. I think they are unique and historical. They needed to be preserved and enjoyed here by others.

He is dressed in a FULL buckskin outfit, heavily decorated with patches, beadwork, leggings, and fringe. He is wearing an Indian Chief's feathered headdress with hair drops. Also wearing moccasins and holding a beautiful gun cover for whatever rifle is within it. It is a spectacular photograph circa 1900.

Montana Territory / Boring Scenic

Large stereo of a Bozeman, Montana scenic view. It looks like a ranch on the bottom but I cannot make out much. OK. It is rather boring but maybe someone from Montana will enjoy it and all Montana views are harder and harder to obtain. This one taken by D. Marsh, Bozeman, Montana. It is large format.

Wild West Shows / Family group of Indian Entertainers
« on: March 09, 2022, 04:09:09 pm »
This is a nice group of four American Indians from a same family group. The two men were probably brothers. The seated man was Papa of the baby and husband of the young woman behind and beside him. The men wear buckskin costumes. The baby is in a elaborate shirt and Mom in a beautifully beaded dress. She holds a single shot rifle. The seated man wears some sort of ribbon and metal. The image is by Smith & Hodson, St. Marys, O. (Ohio). These groups generally worked for Wild West Shows or Patent Medicine Shows. They are a FINE looking group. The cabinet is an 1880s albumen.  There is no identification of who they are.

Indians / Navajo Indian with side arm

Early stereo of the town Of Deadwood, Dakota Territory in 1870s, very early 1880s. It is by "Views in the Black Hills" and titled on the back. "Central City. Deadwood Gulch". It looks mostly the same when Hickok died there in 1876.

79
Wild West Shows / Great Image of Western Couple but bad identification
« on: March 09, 2022, 03:29:24 pm »
This is a case in point. If you see an image you like, and price is right for you, buy it! The image on the back is a weak pencil id saying Annie Oakley and Jim Baker (Her husband). It is completely HOOPDELAIDY! Nonsense. It was put there by someone who did not know or who wanted to get more for it by false pretenses. BUYER BEWARE. However, even though the mount is bad, the image is quite nice of a Wild West Show sharp shooting couple in their buckskin outfits and holding rifles circa 1880-1890.

80
Hangings and Lynchings / Two RPPCs of before and after exceution.
« on: March 09, 2022, 03:02:23 pm »

Indians / Thomas Red Cloud (??)
« on: March 06, 2022, 05:40:17 pm »
Albumen cabinet photograph identified as Thos. Red Cloud . I have not been able to find out exactly who he was. However, he is definitely an Indian. He has on a very elaborate shirt and leather, fringed pants. He is wearing a beaded Indian bag and holds a single shot rifle. He has on soft Indian shoes and a wide brim hat. I am thinking he may have been a trick shot entertainer in one of the Wild West Shows but unknown.

Miscellaneous / Little Big Horn Memorial
« on: March 06, 2022, 05:24:04 pm »
Image taken in 1897 of the markers indicating where several of the soldiers were found after the Custer battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. There is a lengthy description of the event and photo, much of which is sensationalism and nonsense. It is too lengthy to copy here. In the background you can see a photographer created shadow view of Bloody Knife, Sioux Indian, holding up a knife over the markers.  The description on the back portends it to be a real ghost image. "Seen more clearly than the eyes of man". Photograph is by Frank Purcell, Billings, Montana.

83
Wild West Shows / Handicapped Trick Shooter
« on: March 06, 2022, 05:10:53 pm »
This is a very unusual cabinet photograph for its time. The image is sepia and dates in the 1890s. It was taken by Siegfreid Photographer, Quakertown, Pa. It is of a handicapped man with arm birth defects. Most of his arms are not there and no hands. However, he has devised a metal loop attached to the butt stock of his gun in order to hold it on his left arm. He has removed the trigger guard in order to fire it with his left arm. AMAZING! Inventive. He is dressed in a western shirt, leather, fringed pants, boots, and a western hat. He may have been with a Western Wild West Show. Really great and inspiring image. To bad he is not identified.

84
Wild West Shows / Member of a Cowboy Band after 1900
« on: March 06, 2022, 04:52:14 pm »
Unidentified Cowboy Band Member. In ink on the back is North Platte, Nebraska. He holds a clarinet. He is dressed in shotgun chaps, boots, a western shirt, and small brim western style hat. Photographer is Von Goetz, North Platte, Neb. It dates circa 1900-1910.  I would suggest it is not a Wild West Show Band.

Indians / Wa-Kan-O-ZHAN-ZHAN (Medicine Bottle)

Armed Cowboys, Buck skinners and Scouts / Just a nice, armed westerner
« on: March 06, 2022, 04:30:47 pm »
Studio cabinet circa 1890s of a young westerner. The cloths and boots are definitely his. The guns may not be as may have been provided by the photographer. Who knows? However, it is basically irrelevant in this case. He has on a nice bib shirt, western hat and cartridge belt. He is holding s standard 1886 Winchester rifle made for many years in many calibers for hunting. He has a hunting knife in his belt. The image is by C. Fritz but location is not on the mount.  On the back is the man's name. JAMES D. LAMAR.

Stereo of Fred Loring. He was an American journalist, novelist, and poet. He died in 1871. In 1871 he was sent by the "Appleton's Journal" as a correspondent on a cartographic expedition To Arizona.  He wrote several articles. He was also involved in several fights with Indians. The expedition's carriage was attacked by Yavapai Indians near Wickenburg, A.T. and he was killed. The stereo was taken 48 hours before he was killed by photographer O'Sullivan .  The mule's name was "Evil Merodach". It is a very rare stereo and does not have the photographer's mark. Condition is wonderful.

Armed Cowboys, Buck skinners and Scouts / Early 1860s Frontiersman
« on: March 05, 2022, 07:07:33 am »
This CDV is circa 1860s. In this time frame there was far less staging. I am certain the man is exactly what you see. He has on his buckskin coat and wears his shot bag and power flask. He is holding a percussion shotgun.

Miscellaneous / Ft. Grant, Arizona stage
« on: March 05, 2022, 06:48:51 am »
Large, horizonal cabinet photograph of the Civilian and mail stage out of Fort Grant, Arizona Territory in the 1880s. 4 mules pulling it. Driver and shotgun guard.  Image is by D.A. Markey, Fort Grant, Arizona. This is what, normally, a real stage coach looked like. Not like the ones in Hollywood movies. The were slow, dusty, bumpy and stiflingly HOT.

91
I have had this for years. Sold it and bought it back. It was taken by C.F. O'Keefe, Ft. Madison, Iowa. As he has his hunting dog at his feet, I think it is a hunter, not a westerner. He has a full buckskin suite, a cartridge belt and holstered Colt, and he is holding a 44-40 Winchester rifle. Quite a large western hat on his head.  Not identified.

92
Wild West Shows / Famous Jim Kid

Albumen cabinet photograph of Jim Kid. He was a star performer for Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show in the 1880s and 1890s. He is wearing the metals he was rewarded for achievements as a  bucking horse rider. The image is signed by Kid himself and that is authenticated on the back of the mount. Photograph is by Anderson, NY. He was very famous in his venue and time.

Armed Cowboys, Buck skinners and Scouts / Denver Buckskin hunter
« on: March 04, 2022, 04:26:40 pm »
Seems like all men wore buckskin outfits in these days. I am not surprised, if they could afford them, why not? This is a Rare Denver, Colorado cabinet photograph. Colorado photographs per se are Not rare but ones like this are. He has a matching buckskin shirt and pants, western hat, pipe in his mouth, and revolver stuck in the top of his pants. He holds a single shot rifle.  He is photographed in front of a rocky mountain scene. Image is by Wells and King, Denver.

94
This is an artfully done photograph of a man in a decorated buckskin or leather shirt. He has a black bandana around his next and tied in a bow. He is holding a single shot rife and wearing moccasins, and fringed pants. There is an identification on the back as "Capt. Jack Crawford" but I believe this is false. The image dates in the 1880-1890 period.

95
I was very excited to get this photograph. It is a wonderful image of a Victorian Era and Victorian dressed young lady with a single shot shotgun and Bowie knife. The image is IDed as Dodie Schroeder. It was taken by Chas. Lainer, Paris Panel, San Francisco, Cal. On the back it has written:  Fair, 1892, Mechanics Pavilion, S.F. She is quite and attractive girl. Condition is MINT and CLEAR.

Two cabinet photos I believe taken in the same session (although the mounts are a bit different). She is in the same dress, has the same shotgun belt, and has the same shotgun. Both are taken by H. J. Godfrey, Santa Cruz, Cal. One mount simply says Elite while the other says Elite Photo Studio. They may have been taken at the same time but published at different times as the mounts were changed. At any rate, she holds a double barrel shotgun and evidently was a wing shot, probably shooting clay pigeons or glass balls in exposition. She is not identified. Images date circa 1895-1905, my guess.
Few collectors showcase the ladies but they were some of the best riders and best shots with shotgun, rifle, and pistol in the Western show era. I like them very much and buy them when I can. They have an honored place on this site.

Montana Territory / Livingston Cowboy

Studio cabinet photograph of a real Montana cowboy. The photographer is Geo. W. Potter, Livingston, Montana circa 1890-1900. He is not as dramatic as others but he is a real Montana, working cowboy. He has a Colt in a double loop holster and cartridge belt. He wears fringed gauntlets and high top cowboy boots. Livingston, Montana was where Calamity Jane died.

Here is another cabinet of the Indian that is next after this one. His Indian name is spelled phonically at the bottom and "Star".

Indians / Indian with bow and arrow

There is no identification but my experience tells me this is an Indian used in one of those Snake Oil Shows up East. He is dressed in Eastern Indian costume. Decorated buckskin jacket with long fringe. Decorated long shirt with fringe. Western hat. He is holding a bow in his left hand and an arrow in his right hand. It is albumen and circa 1880s-1890. He looks very uncomfortable having the photo taken.
I just found his Indian name. It is Ke Ki ou Kah ion , Called "Star".

Obviously staged cowboy cabinet card. Whoever the photographer was, he sure didn't know what a real cowboy looked like. What New Yorker ever did? He is wearing a cheap, checkered suite, has two Saturday Night specials in holsters (one turned BACKWARDS!), holding a .22 pump rifle, and wearing boots made more for a fireman than a cowboy. He is also wearing workman's gauntlets. Photo by R.G. Frank, Rochester, NY. Worth much less than most so don't pay much for these.
