Cabinet photograph of the last legal hanging in Tucson, Arizona in 1908.  The man hung was E. W. Hawkins.  Standing next to him is Rev. Peter Timmerman.  At the right is Sheriff Nabor Pacheco and at the left is Undersheriff Henry Myers.   The scaffold was in the yard of the Pima County Courthouse.    It was February, 1908.    Hawkins confessed to the murder of Albert Leonhardt in December, 1907.    This confession led to him being sentenced to be hung.  Hawkins met his fate coolly, smoked, talked and sang hymns.   The scene including his death was sensational news in Pima County at the time.   This photograph was taken and boys sold them as souvenirs, although they are extremely rare today.   This one has seen better days but beggars can't be chosey. .
