Wikipedia spells his name Renville. This original photograph of him spells his name Remville on the front and back. The back appears to be his original ink signature. At any rate he was also known as Ti'wakan (Sacred Lodge) and was the Chief of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Sioux Tribe from 1866 until his death in 1892. He opposed fighting with the U.S. and was a leader in the Dakota Peace party. He helped create the Lake Traverse Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Images of him are rare. This one was taken by Steinhauer, S. Dakota. in the late 1880s or circa 1890.
