Large photograph (no photographer's mark) of the State Prison in Stillwater, Minn. It is identified and dated, 1886, on the back. It is "from the North". This is the prison that housed the three Younger brothers after the Northfield, Minn. attempted bank robbery. In 1886, they would have been there for 9-10 years. It was essentially a hell hole as most early prisons were. There was no PC then and prisoners were there to be punished, not rehabilitated.
