This is an example of a COMPLETELY staged image.   Everything this boy is wearing looks funky.   He has on some sort of pants/leggings over his own pants.   His high top boots do not look like his.   His two Colts are stuck in at odd angles in who knows what (no holsters).   He seems to be wearing a sash (?) rather than a belt.   The fringe on his leggings looks ridiculous.   The image is circa 1890's and he is holding an old percussion rifle.   But as an example of staged, you cannot have a better one.   It was probably taken while the kid was in town from the farm; on a lark and having fun!    The photograph was taken by Ong and Hartough's Art Gallery, Wichita, Kansas.
