Gabriel Dumont was a Metis leader. He was involved in the North-West Rebellion and the Canadian battles of Batoche, Fish Creek, and Duck Lake. In 1882, he was elected hunt chief of the Saskatchewan Metis. He played a large role in the well being of the Metis community. This photograph of him was in the 1880s when he was captured and transported to Fort Assiniboine after the Metis wars. He escaped into the United States, gained amnesty, and returned. He lived until 1906.
