This is a tintype image of the gambler and gunman, Luke Short. He is best known as a friend of Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp and the killer of Long Hair Jim Courtright. The back of the image is scratched "Luke Short Fort Dodge 1882". It is in contemporary handwriting. Comparing with other known images of Short and taking in consideration age and weight changes, I believe this IS Luke Short. The image came out of an early Dodge City collection. However, I have NO written provenance so I am going on my own years of experience (which I am entitled to do). His grave is in the old Northside Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas .
