This is a rare subject matter cabinet photograph. It is identified on the back as the "Sand Bar Ferry. Noted dueling grounds in the South. Natchez, Ms".  The Sand Bar fight was also known as the Vidalia Sandbar Fight.  Jim Bowie was involved in this one-on-one duel as a second for Jefferson Wells. General Samuel Cuny and Jefferson Wells were killed and the famous JIM BOWIE was seriously wounded. It took place on September 19, 1827.  Bowie killed Major Norris Wright with his Bowie knife and then, heavily wounded, he cut off part of Alfred Blanchard'  forearm. All this in a 90 second brawl.  The fight became legend as Bowie's ability with what became the Bowie Knife. This image shows where in the river the fight  occurred. I know of no other such image extant.
