Champ Ferguson organized a guerrilla company for the CSA in Tennessee during the Civil War. He attacked anyone who he believed supported the Union. He cooperated with Maj. General Joseph Wheeler and Brig. General John Hunt Morgan. He held a commission as a captain of partisan Rangers. After the War, Union troops arrested Ferguson and charged him with murdering 53 men during the War. He was found guilty and sentenced to hang October 10, 1865. He was hanged on October 20, 1865. In this CDV photograph, Ferguson is the tall man on the right. He is being photographed with one of his jail guards prior to his execution. He even signed this image on the back for the guard. The guard was later disciplined for have his loaded gun while Ferguson was not shackled.
