Unmounted sepia image with Extra Finish gloss. The man in the hole is train robber John Sontag. The other men are the posse who chased him down. Fourth from the left is the Sheriff in Visalia, California. Sontag was originally from Mankato, Minnesota. He and his brother George were known as "The Sontag Brothers gang". In this image he is not dead. He was shot to pieces but survived and was taken to Fresno, California. He died soon after either of his wounds or tetanus as a result of them. This was in 1893. This was after a successful life of robbing trains for several years.
