This image by the famous photography Barry and previously published generally is of California Joe Milner (Moses Embree Milner). He was an American gold miner and early Scout on the frontier. He was born in 1829, left home at 14, and went to St. Louis and Ft. Laramie, Wyoming. He was early on a fur trapper and later, in the Mexican War a scout for General Stephen W. Kearney in 1846.  After that he prospected for gold in California. In 1853 he established a cattle ranch in Corvallis, Oregon. In 1866, he became a scout again at Ft. Riley, Kansas.  In 1868, he became Chief of Scouts for George Custer. In 1874, He led Custer in the Black Hills Expedition. After Custer died, he scouted for General Crook in the 5th U.S. Cavalry. In 1876 he was murdered by a man named Thomas Newcomb. He is buried at Fort McPherson National Cemetery.
